New concepts

Here’s the situation : you need to have your house repainted. You could either have one man do it in 7 days, or 7 men do it in one day. What would you choose?

If you are like the majority of people, you probably would like to get it done as quickly as possible. That’s the challenge of 1-888-WOW-1DAY! A painting team and a new franchise opportunity that could become your dream business too.

But who are these people?
They are not exactly new to the franchise world. 1-888-WOW-1DAY is the new business of Brian Scudamore, the founder of 1-800-GOT-JUNK? – which is simply the largest junk removal service in the world with close to 200 franchises in Canada, the US and Australia.

In summer 2010, Brian was in the situation described above. The company One Day Painting, founded by Jim Bodden, offered their service. Brian was very skeptical that they would keep the promise contained in the name. Not only did the very professional team, all in uniform, complete the job within the time limit, but the quality of the work was spotless. Brian had been on the lookout for a new venture. He had found it.

Why should this second project be as successful as the first one?

Well, for starters, 1-888-WOW-1DAY! Painting and 1-800-GOT-JUNK? are based on the same model, and by replicating it, you guarantee a transfer of knowledge and you avoid the mistakes due to trial and error. 1-888-WOW-1DAY! Painting’s centralized call centre and online booking system is based off their award winning counterparts from 1-800-GOT-JUNK?

Something else should be considered: Brian worked in the Junk Removal industry for 10 years before building the franchise model. Similarly Jim Bodden, who experimented first the reality of the one-day painting concept, has become the director of operations for 1-888-WOW-1DAY! Painting. He is there to assist and support franchisees in each every aspect of the business, from the training and resources to the type of van to choose.

What’s the history of this young company?

In less than a year, there are already three franchises in operation : Vancouver, Fraser Valley and Seattle. Before 2012, San Jose, CA, and Austin, TX, will open, and Calgary in January.

Although there are a lot of residential and commercial painters everywhere, there is no concept as striking as the one-day painting challenge. That has a lot to do with the attention the company has received recently.

To give an example of the kind of attention the franchise receives, the Fraser Valley franchise is owned by a former 1-800-GOT-JUNK? sales team leader. Since the junk removal map is very full, he jumped on the possibility to get an exclusive business in his own town before anybody else did.

What are the three main strengths of 1888wow1day painting?

1) Just like Brian Scudamore’s first business, it relies heavily on strong PR campaigns. The head office in Vancouver provides Public Relations support to launch local franchise offices and generates stories for the press. This is one way to leverage Brian’s name (He has been mentioned in the New York Times, on Oprah, the Got Junk is a case study used at the Harvard School of Business, he’s quoted on Starbucks Coffee cups etc) and to draw attention to the Franchise partners.
2) The franchise manager Jason also uses the services of franchise brokers
3) A unique concept and the possibility to be part of a successful business story

Aly-Khan Virani, 1-888-WOW-1DAY! Painting PR manager, says it takes approximately three months to become operational. In other words, the entrepreneurs who see the potential in this project have just enough time to be ready for the 2012 painting season!
